"Com 57 anos, os norte-americanos Ronnie e Donnie Galyon são os gêmeos siameses mais velhos do mundo. Os irmãos têm surpreendido os médicos, já que superaram a esperança de vida que havia sido prognosticada para eles, segundo o tabloide inglês "The Sun".
Quando Maureen Galyon deu à luz em 1951, em Dayton, no estado de Ohio (EUA), não tinha ideia que estava esperando dois bebês. Na época, o pai descartou fazer uma cirurgia para separá-los, pois acreditava que a possibilidade de sobrevivência seria mínima.
Quando Ronnie e Donnie Galyon nasceram, segundo dados médicos, havia apenas um caso de gêmeos siameses para cada 100 mil nascimentos. Além disso, 60% nasciam mortos. Na época, eles ficaram internados no hospital por 29 meses.
Hoje, os gêmeos siameses estão com a saúde debilitada. Eles sofrem de escoliose e artrite, além estarem acima do peso. Eles só podem ficar de pé por um período curto de tempo e raramente saem para o lado de fora da residência.
Apesar das dificuldades, Ronnie e Donnie têm uma estreita relação e atualmente vivem em sua própria casa em Dayton. Segundo Jim, irmão mais novo dos siameses, "eles têm quatro braços e quatro pernas” e conseguem se coordenar perfeitamente.
Os gêmeos têm corações, pulmões e estômagos separados, mas têm unidos o tubo digestivo e possuem um intestino e um conjunto de órgãos sexuais. Um dos problemas que irrita os irmãos é justamente a falta de uma relação física com uma mulher."
